# How to use PromoStar to remove location and device data from the files you upload

> PromoStar strips GPS location, camera and device details, and other hidden metadata from photos and videos you upload to your Media Library, before the file is stored.

Upload a photo or video to your Media Library, and PromoStar removes the hidden metadata inside it before the file is stored.

## Steps

1. Open **Media Library** in the sidebar and click **Upload**, or drop files anywhere on the page.
2. Wait for the upload tray to finish. The metadata is removed before the file reaches PromoStar's CDN, so no unstripped copy of a new upload is stored there.
3. If a file shows **Failed**, it was not stored. The message in the upload tray tells you to export the file again or to retry the upload.

## What is removed

PromoStar removes the metadata tags stored inside the file. That includes:

* GPS and other location data
* Camera and phone make, model, lens, and serial number
* Capture, creation, and edit dates and times
* Software, encoder, author, owner, copyright, and comment fields
* Embedded preview thumbnails

For videos, it drops the container and stream metadata and chapters.

## What is kept

* The picture and video content. JPEG files are never recompressed.
* Color profiles.
* Image orientation (except in WebP files), and video rotation and mirroring, so files still display the right way up.
* GIF and WebP animation.

<Info>
  This check runs on files you upload. Files PromoStar imports from your RedGifs account are stored as downloaded, without this step.
</Info>

## Good to know

* HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, TIFF, and BMP files are converted to a WebP working copy for the library. PromoStar keeps your original in its original format, and the original is stripped too.

## Where processing happens

Your upload goes from PromoStar's app to PromoStar's own media service, which runs the removal and sends back the clean file. Only the cleaned file is stored.
